ARCHERY TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE

Mt. Carmel, IL –  In their first-ever appearance at the U.S. National 3D Collegiate Championships, the Wabash Valley College Archery team brought home hardware in mixed team competition, with all five (5) team members competing individually in their respective class.

The 2018 U.S. National 3D Collegiate Championships is held for members of the USA Archery Collegiate Archery Program and offers competitive divisions for recurve, compound, barebow, and bowhunter archers.  This year's event was held October 25-28 in Foley, Alabama.  There were 32 Colleges and Universities represented with 335 shooters making up 48 teams.  Out of these, 18 archers and coaches have ties to the Illinois S3DA (Scholastic 3D Archery) from four (4) different Colleges, including Mississippi College, Union College, Wabash Valley College, and Southeastern Illinois College.

The Wabash Valley College Archery team consists of five (5) archers, including Jacob Quillen of West Salem, IL, Jessica Shilling of Parkersburg, IL, Karissa McIntire of Sumner, IL, Taylor LaVarier of Mt. Carmel, IL, and Zachary Kemper of Mt. Carmel, IL.  Three archers from the team – Jacob Quillen, Jessica Shilling, and Karissa McIntire – all have formerly been a part of the Illinois S3DA.

During individual competition, Jacob Quillen placed 5th and Zachary Kemper placed 25th out of 80 in the men's bowhunter class.  Jessica Shilling placed 5th and Karissa McIntire placed 7th out of 67 in the women's bowhunter class.  Taylor LaVarier placed 41st out of 55 in the open bowhunter class.  In the men and women's mixed team competition, Jacob Quillen and Jessica Shilling placed third overall behind Union College (2nd) and University of the Cumberland (1st).

Head Archery Coach Earl Lawrence considered the tournament a success for the Archery team…. "Our team has been working hard, and I knew they were capable of being competitive at the National level.  With two Top 5 finishes, a Top 10, and capturing 3rd in the mixed teams, I think we exceeded our expectations and gained a lot of confidence heading into the indoor season."
