Walters State Drops Games to Wabash Valley College and Lake Land College at Blazer Classic

Walters State saw its four-match winning streak come to an end Friday, dropping both their opening matches in the Blazer Classic Volleyball Tournament at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind. The Lady Senators fell 3-1 to Wabash Valley College in the opener, then 3-1 to Lake Land College in the nightcap.

 

The Lady Senators (5-3) and Wabash Valley (3-4) went toe-to-toe for their entire match, with the Lady Senators barely falling 25-22 in game one. The Lady Warriors outlasted Walters State in Game two by a score of 25-23.

 

Facing defeat, Walters State battled back in the third frame, taking it 26-24, but couldn't hold off Wabash Valley in the final frame, losing 25-22.

 

Freshman Olivia Oxendine (Pensacola, Fla.) led the Lady Senators with 14 kills, with freshman Jania Hill (Morristown, Tenn.) contributing 12 and sophomore Courtney Dotson (Greenville, Tenn.) adding 10.

 

Sophomore Alexis Wakefield (Portland, Tenn.) pulled out the shovel for 22 digs in the first contest. Freshman Taylor Tigue (Franklin, Tenn.) had 11 and Dotson recorded 10.

 

Walters State battled again from the opening whistle to the final point in their second match, but still fell to Lake Land College, 27-25, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-22.

 

Hill was once again a force in the front court, recording 12 kills against the Lakers. Oxendine finished with 11. Wakefield toppers herself on defense in match two, piling up 29 digs. Tigue finished with 19 and Hill added 13 to her stat sheet.

 

The Lady Senators continue on in the Blazer Classic, facing off against host university Vincennes Saturday at 10 a.m., then John A. Logan College at noon.
