Lady Warriors fall in strong offensive showing

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. Despite a strong match offensively, Wabash Valley fell 3-1 Wednesday night to Kaskaskia College.

The opening set went the way of the Blue Angels, 25-19. Wabash Valley tallied just five errors in the first set.

The Lady Warriors evened the match in the second set, winning 25-23. After the set was tied at 7-7, Wabash Valley went on a 6-2 run to force a Kaskaskia timeout, turning the set in the Lady Warriors? favor.

Thanks to a quick start in the third set, Kaskaskia won 25-18.

The fourth set began with the squads exchanging the first four points before Kaskaskia tried to pull away. After a Wabash Valley timeout, the Lady Warriors had to battle back from a 10-3 deficit. Even with two strong pushes in the set, the Lady Warriors fell narrowly in the final set, 25-21.

Freshman setter Alyssa Wilke once again had a solid outing, totaling 37 assists in the match. She now has 902 assists this season, good for 9th most in the nation.

The Lady Warriors work from the service line once again impressed, putting up 15 team service aces. Freshman middle blocker Alexis Johnson led the way with five, while freshman outside hitter Taylor Pittman followed with four.

"We work a lot on serving and playing excellent on our side of the net," Head Coach Rachel Refenes said. "We will continue to do that this weekend."

Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Miller led the way offensively with 11 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Madison Farmer and outside hitter Emmalynn Hart both followed with seven each.

"I believe in playing aggressive and taking strategic chances," Refenes added. "I hope the girls continue to play outside their comfort zone and see what kind of results that gets us on Saturday."

The Wabash Valley (7-23) season continues with a tri-match with St. Louis Community College (4-31) and Frontier Community College (6-26) in St. Louis on Saturday at noon and 2:00 p.m.
