Lady Warriors fall in back-and-forth Sophomore Night contest

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. The Lady Warriors volleyball team celebrated their Sophomores Monday night but fell in a tough five set loss to Rend Lake College.

Rend Lake took the opening set after Wabash Valley stormed back in the middle portion, taking a brief 17-16 lead before falling in the set, 25-18.

The Lady Warriors kept themselves within striking distance for the opening half of the second set before Rend Lake closed it out 25-14.

Wabash Valley stepped it up offensively in the third set, hitting for a .286 hitting percentage with 14 kills. The teams traded leads throughout the third set before the Lady Warriors closed the set on an 8-3 run to win 25-20.

In another back-and-forth set, the Lady Warriors capitalized on Rend Lake errors in the fourth set while hitting for a .207 hitting percentage themselves. After leading by seven points at one point in the set, Wabash Valley tied the match with a 20-18 win.

A quick start from Rend Lake was too much for Wabash Valley to overcome as Rend Lake took the match with a 15-10 fifth set win.

The following sophomores were recognized Monday night:

Middle blocker Madison Farmer, who accumulated 378 kills, 120 blocks, 24 aces and 48 digs across 60 total matches. Farmer will graduate with an associate degree in management.

Libero Ava Greathouse, finishing with 587 digs and 49 aces in 51 career matches. Greathouse will graduate with an associate degree in management.

Outside hitter Emmalynn Hart, who has put together 117 kills, 29 aces, 190 digs and seven blocks across 48 matches. Hart will graduate with an associate degree in science.

Outside hitter Hailey Miller, putting together 425 kills, 45 aces, 417 digs and 30 blocks in 61 total matches. Miller will graduate with an associate degree in science.

Middle blocker Sarah Melo, who accumulated 56 total attack attempts, 12 kills and six blocks in just 18 matches. Melo will graduate with an associate degree in science and arts.

Farmer and Miller led the way offensively for the Lady Warriors Monday night, with 15 and 12 kills, respectively.

Freshman setter Alyssa Wilke continued her strong season with 42 assists and seven service aces.

At the net, Hart, Melo and freshman outside hitter Taylor Pittman each recorded a block in the contest.

Freshman libero Grace Lenard had 20 digs, finishing the regular season with 4.0 digs per set, a team-high.

Up next for the Lady Warriors is the Region 24 Tournament where they will face Kaskaskia College on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
