The first Wabash Valley College athletic event of the 2021-22 sports season is this Saturday, when the Lady Warrior volleyball team hosts Southeastern Illinois in an exhibition scrimmage.

The first serve will be at 8:00 a.m. at Spencer Sports Center. A second practice match against Oakland City University, scheduled for 2:00 p.m., has been cancelled.

WVC will finish the pre-season on Monday, Aug. 23 at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Mark Colvin's squad then opens the regular season on Thursday, Sept. 2 on the road at Kaskaskia College in a Great Rivers Athletic Conference matchup.

Following a return game at Southeastern Illinois on Sept. 4, the Lady Warriors will open the home season on Tuesday, Sept. 7 against GRAC opponent John A. Logan at 6:30 p.m.

During the most recent COVID-truncated spring schedule, WVC upset Logan, 3-2, in one of the highlights of a 14-9 season, the first winning campaign in three seasons since the resumption of the program after a long hiatus.

The Lady Warriors went to finish 8-5 in the GRAC, good for a third-place tie, before advancing to the semifinals of the NJCAA Midwest District B championship in Ottumwa, Iowa.

There, they lost to Missouri State-West Plains, which eventually finished ninth in the national tournament, which it hosted.

WVC will play in four tournaments during the season, two at Vincennes and one at John A. Logan. The Lady Warriors will host a tri-match affair on Monday, Oct. 11, squaring off against St. Louis CC at 3 p.m. before coming back in a 7 p.m. matchup against Frontier.

Other regular-season home games are slotted against Southeastern (Sept. 13), Shawnee (Sept. 16), Lake Land (Sept. 21), defending GRAC champion Kaskaskia (Sept. 30), Vincennes (Oct. 1), Lincoln Trail (Oct. 7) and Rend Lake (Oct. 21).

All single home games will begin at 6:30 p.m., apart from the Vincennes match, which will start at 6 p.m.

Spencer Sports Center will play host to one of the Region 24 tournaments on Oct. 29-30, with the survivors heading to Midwest District tournament play in Missouri the following weekend (Nov. 5-6). The NJCAA Division I national tournament returns to West Plains, Missouri on Nov. 18-20.
