Warriors sweep in Chicago for best start since 2016-17 season

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Wabash Valley men's basketball team is off to its' best start since the 2016-17 season. The Warriors improved to 6-1 with a weekend sweep of games at the Truman Classic.

On Friday, WVC defeated Richard J. Daley, 81-63, before beating Truman (0-7) for a second time this season, 69-62, on Saturday. Both games were played at Daley, which played host to the games.

The Warriors of '16-'17 bolted to a 10-0 start to the season, which finished at 23-9 with an 82-70 loss to Vincennes in the Midwest District championship game.

Here is a recap of the weekend's action:

Wabash Valley 81, Richard J. Daley 63

Jakobi Heady scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the first half to guide the Warriors to the win. A total of 22 second-half free throws helped keep the Daley Bulldogs (0-7) at bay.

Also scoring in double figures for the winners were Gary Clay with 12 points, and Trayton Trice with 11.

WVC led 38–31 at the half.

Wabash Valley 69, Harry S. Truman 62

This game was in sharp contrast to the first meeting between these two, one week earlier in Mt. Carmel, when WVC survived a 91-88 shootout with the Falcons in a game which featured 27 3-point field goals between both teams.

This time, the Falcons still managed eight 3-balls, the Warriors only four.

Clay led Wabash Valley with 22 points. Heady added 18.

In other games at the Truman Classic, Division II Elgin (5-2) downed Truman, 104-74, and Daley, 92-55.

The Warriors return home to Spencer Sports Center on Tuesday, Nov. 22 for their Great Rivers Athletic Conference opener against defending league champion and 19th-ranked John A. Logan (4-2). Game time will be 7:00 p.m.
