MT. CARMEL, Ill. -- You can hear it throughout the Wabash Valley dugout. It is a constant refrain.

'Find a way.'

"We say that a lot," says Warrior coach Aaron Biddle. "Just find a way to win a game, scratch together an at-bat, find a way to get out of a jam on the mound."

That credo was never more apropos than on Monday at Fournier Field, when the Warriors somehow rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Lincoln Trail, 7-6, on Daniel Contraras' walk-off line drive into right field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The victory completed a doubleheader sweep for WVC, now 21-7 on the year and 6-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. In the opener, the 9th-ranked Warriors jumped to an early lead and cruised to a 9-3 win.

Lincoln Trail fell to 12-11 on the season and 2-4 in the GRAC.

Luke Leverton, making his first start on the mound after seven often-flawless appearances out of the bullpen, was in his second inning of work when he was struck by a batted ball.

Biddle said Leverton got hit on the bottom side of his wrist on his throwing hand. But he stayed in the game for a few more pitches until swelling brought his day to an end.

"We love his grit and his competitiveness and wanting to stay out there," Biddle said. "I probably left him in there a little too long. But we were able to overcome it."

Lincoln Trail took advantage and jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

X-rays may be needed to determine the full extent of the injury to Leverton, according to Biddle.

Forced into the game much sooner than expected was Louis Philippe Langevin, who nonetheless gave the Warriors a solid 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing only two runs. "He came in and really saved the day," said Biddle of Langevin. "To have to come in at that spot, he was able to limit some runs, and gave us some length in the middle which we needed at the time. That was a huge outing."

WVC scored once in the bottom of the second inning when Isaias Villarreal reached on a fielder's choice that scored Keaton Mahan.

Trailing 6-1, the Warriors began the turnaround with two runs in the fifth. A two-run hit by Nick Williams brough WVC to within three runs, at 6-3.

The Warriors took advantage of Lincoln Trail pitching wildness in the sixth inning to tie the game, 6-6. Rich Bonomolo, Luke Evans, and Williams each drew bases-loaded walks for RBIs.

Sam Mettert, the third hurler used by Biddle in the game, came on in the sixth and kept Lincoln Trail off the board the rest of the way out. He picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the year.

In the decisive eighth, the bases were loaded with two outs when Contreras drove a 2-1 pitch into right for the game-winner and the ensuing celebratory mob scene carried him further into the right field corner.

In the first game, Wabash Valley scored three runs each in the second and third innings and went on to a 9-3 victory.

"We got a couple of big innings early," Biddle said. "When you put nine runs on the board and pitch great and play great defense, it usually turns out well."

Starter Agnel Miranda went six innings and picked up the win, moving his record to 4-0 on the season. Mike Sokol followed with three innings of shutout relief.

Jamil Torres, Villarreal, and Odden each had two hits in the opener for the winners.

The Warriors open their next GRAC series on Thursday at John A. Logan (17-7, 3-0), at 3 p.m. The two clubs will pair up again two days later in a 12-noon doubleheader in Mt. Carmel.
