MATTOON, Ill. -- The post-season opens on Sunday for the Wabash Valley women's basketball team. The 12th-ranked Lady Warriors begin play in the NJCAA Midwest District tournament at Lake Land College in Mattoon.

WVC (27-1), the No. 1 seed in the nine-team tournament, plays eighth-seeded John A. Logan (9-17) at 1 p.m. CST in the first of four quarterfinal games. Logan advanced through a play-in game victory over Lincoln Trail, 78-64, on Friday night.

The winners return on Tuesday for the semifinal games, which leads to the Thursday championship game. The winner gets an automatic berth in the NJCAA Division I national tournament, which begins Mar. 22 in Lubbock, Texas.

Wabash Valley is seeking its' seventh consecutive District title. They have made six resultant trips to Texas during that time, with the 2020 tournament cancelled due to COVID after the pairings had already been determined.

This will be the third meeting between the Lady Warriors and the Lady Vols of John A. Logan. WVC won the first meeting between the two, on Nov. 22 in Mt. Carmel, by a 94-59 count. Then on Jan. 21 in Carterville, WVC prevailed, 130-63.

Shaulana Wagner led the Warriors in scoring both times, with 26 points in the initial meeting, and 22 in the follow up. In the second matchup, WVC scored 76 points in the first half, and put eight players in double figures.

Kendra Johnson led Logan in the second matchup with 23 points. In the opener, she had 10 points, and was tied for team-high honors along with Madison Calvin and Rhylea Johnson.

The Lady Warriors finished the regular season as the highest-scoring team in junior college basketball, with an average of 103.5 points per game. That is the highest figure of the last 10 years, though still shy of the national record of 110.5 points set by Central Florida in the 1996-97 season.

Luke Scheidecker's team is also on top in six other categories. They are second in field goal percentage, and fourth in assists as well.
