MT. CARMEL, Ill. -- There really is no place like home.

The Wabash Valley softball team, after 19 games on the road, finally played a home game at Paul Schnarre Field on Wednesday. The friendly confines suited them well, as Demi Wolfe threw a two-hit shutout and the Lady Warriors defeated Lincoln Trail, 8-0, in the first game of a Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The second game was suspended by rain with WVC leading, 3-1, in the third inning. It will be completed at a date and time to be determined.

Wolfe tossed her first shutout of the year, striking out four and walking only one enroute to the five-inning win. She is now 4-6 on the year. The freshman righthander threw 73 pitches, 47 of them strikes.

The Lady Warriors banged out 12 hits at the plate, with Jayley Akers going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Marisa Lane and Kinsly Heichelbech each had two hits.

Kinley Edwards put Wabash Valley ahead in the bottom of the second with her second home run of the year, a solo shot to left field to lead off the frame that made it 1-0.

Akers then got into the long-ball act in the third inning, with a 3-run blast to make it 5-0, which came on the heels of an RBI single by Lane. Later in the frame, Heichelbech singled in a run to make it 6-0.

In the fourth, Akers singled up the middle for her third hit and fourth RBI of the day and the Lady Warriors were up 7-0.

Akers leads the team in runs batted in with 15.

The game ended via the eight-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double to right field off the bat of Abby Schreiner

WVC is now 6-14 on the year and 1-2 in the GRAC. Lincoln Trail fell to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
