ULLIN, Ill. -- Demi Wolfe threw a two-hit shutout as Wabash Valley snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Shawnee in the first game of a Great Rivers Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Friday.

The Lady Warriors' offense took over in the second game with a 16-3 victory to complete a sweep in Ullin.

WVC improved to 15-27 overall and 10-11 in GRAC games with the two wins. Shawnee fell to 3-34 and 2-20.

It was Wolfe's third complete-game shutout of the year. She struck out five and did not issue a walk in her seven-inning outing.

The Lady Warriors did not get much to work with offensively, either, collecting only three hits in the game. But one was enough, thanks to Jayley Akers, who hit a team-leading seventh home run in the fourth inning.

Akers not only leads in homers, but RBIs as well, with 33. She is second on the team in hitting at .328.

In the nitecap, Shawnee bolted to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Wabash Valley scored the next 16 runs in succession to win it in six innings. The Lady Warriors put up two runs each in the second and third innings, followed by six-run frames in the fourth and sixth.

Akers hit another home run, as did Marisa Lane (her third of the year), but Kinsly Heichelbech had perhaps the best game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Lexi Burris worked four innings in the circle to get the win. She allowed two earned runs, while striking out five and walking two.

Kyrsten White went the final two innings, fanning one batter and walking one.

Jade Montgomery's team returns to Paul Schnarre Field on Tuesday to host Southwestern (16-11, 9-6). The game was originally scheduled for Monday but has been pushed back one day. The first game of the GRAC doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. CDT.
